Ice coverage across the Great Lakes remains at a historical low with a total coverage of 6% reported. This is well below the historical average which is approximately 40% for this time of year. The bulk of ice coverage remains on the northern, Canadian sides of the Lakes. However, there remain a few locations in United States waters that have notable ice. For Lake Michigan ice remains across Green Bay, portions of the Bays de Noc, and near the Strait of Mackinac. On Lake Superior, there remains ice in the Chequamegon Bay and in Whitefish Bay, but the remainder of the lake is primarily ice free. Lake Huron has limited ice remaining in the American waters with ice in portions of Saginaw Bay and near the Straight of Mackinac. Both Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair remain ice free. In the coming days, a regional warm up to above average temperatures is expected to result in ice decay with no days conducive to ice growth expected until March 6, which will be isolated to the northern portions of the region. Expect the remaining 6% of ice coverage to decrease in the coming days. As some of the ice begins to thin in the aforementioned bays, winds may result in the breaking and shifting of ice.
