The recent arctic air outbreak has resulted in ice starting to form in the Great Lakes. Shore ice has developed from Superior to the Apostle Islands on western Lake Superior and the Chequamegon Bay is nearly ice covered. Some shore ice is starting to form from Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore to Whitefish Point and also in Whitefish Bay. The southern third and far northern portions of Green Bay are mostly ice covered and ice is forming along the north shore of Lake Michigan. Ice is forming around the edges of the Saginaw Bay and Thunder Bay. Most of Lake St. Clair is now ice covered and ice is rapidly expanding west of the Lake Erie Islands. Arctic air will remain across the Great Lakes Region for much of the week. Temperatures will briefly moderate but remain below normal across the southern Great Lakes from Wednesday through Friday, before falling again for the weekend. Meanwhile the upper lakes will remain entrenched within the very cold airmass. Moderate to rapid ice growth is expected to continue around the shores of Lake Superior, especially along the western shore of the Keweenaw Peninsula and on Whitefish Bay. Ice will continue to expand on Green Bay and Saginaw Bay and along the western shores of Lake Huron. In addition, much of the area west of the Lake Eire Islands will become ice covered and ice will start to grow along the south shore of Lake Erie from the Sandusky Bay to Cleveland. A Gale Warning is in effect for portions of Lake Superior through 10 PM Tuesday. Southwest winds will approach gale force on the Central Great Lakes later Tuesday into Wednesday. Some movement of the newly formed ice is possible as winds increase mid-week.
