Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect from the central Plains across the upper Midwest into the Great Lakes, as well as portions of New England and central Appalachians. High Wind Warnings are in effect for parts of the Appalachians, New England, eastern Gulf Coast, as well as along the Eastern Seaboard. Recent radar trends and surface observations indicated that light to moderate snow, locally heavy, stretched from Oklahoma through the central Plains, across the Midwest and into the lower Great Lakes. Meanwhile on the warm side of the system, rain locally heavy, was overspreading much of the eastern U.S. with severe thunderstorms over portions of the eastern Gulf states. Moderate to locally heavy snow of 6 to locally 12 inches is forecast to fall on the northwest periphery of this system from the central Plains through the upper Midwest into the central Great Lakes. Meanwhile, heavy snow possibly locally reaching a foot is forecast for tonight over interior New England before warm air from the south surges up the Eastern Seaboard and changes the snow to rain on Wednesday. In addition, strong winds and heavy rain are expected from the Deep South to the East Coast on the warm side of the system, with a slight to moderate risk of excessive rainfall rapidly spreading up the East Coast through tonight.
