An occluded front extends to the east and southeast of this low over the central Rockies in Colorado. A cold front extends to the south near the Rio Grande Valley into northern Mexico. Latest radar and surface observations show moderate to heavy precipitation slowly dissipating in intensity and coverage across the Intermountain West, except along the cold front extending through New Mexico where precipitation is intensifying. Additional snowfall accumulations in the higher elevations of as much as 2 to 10 inches are forecast, with locally higher amounts of over a foot. Maximum snowfall totals will be focused across the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, the Unita Mountains of Utah, and portions of central Wyoming. As the system continues to push east through midweek, the energy associated with it will consolidate across the Rockies, with low-pressure developing over the central and southern Plains and intensifying while gradually tracking towards the Upper Midwest. This system is forecast to produce a large swath of moderate to heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain as it tracks across the central United States. Heavy snowfall accumulations of 6 to 18 inches is forecast across a broad region encompassing the northern Plains over the next few days, with locally higher amounts possible. Significant ice accumulations of 0.25-0.50" is currently forecast over eastern Nebraska, northern Iowa, and southern Minnesota associated with this storm system.
