####018002828#### AXPQ20 PGUM 141944 TWDPQ Tropical Weather Discussion National Weather Service Tiyan GU 544 AM ChST Mon Apr 15 2024 Tropical Weather Discussion for the Western North Pacific between the Equator and 25N from 130E to 180. The following information is based on recent satellite imagery/data, weather observations, radar, and meteorological analysis. ...SPECIAL FEATURES... None. ...OTHER WEATHER SYSTEMS... NEAR-EQUATORIAL TROUGH... The near-equatorial trough (NET) extends west-northwest from the equator near 140E, through a weak circulation centered around 1N135E, and exit the region around 5N130E as it continues towards the Philippines. Scattered to numerous showers and isolated thunderstorms are developing along and just north of the NET, with showers developing near and south of Palau and extending back towards Eauripik in Yap State. Showers become spotty to scattered north of Palau and Eauripik, which includes Yap Proper. TRADE-WIND TROUGHS... A couple of trade-wind troughs near Chuuk State, one located between the NET and Weno near 6N145E and the second south to southeast of the Weno near 5N154E, are generating scattered to numerous showers and isolated thunderstorms across Chuuk Lagoon and nearby islands and continuing south towards the equator. TRADE-WIND SURGE... The trade-wind surge is weakening, with scatterometer data showing pockets of 20 knot winds across the northern atolls of the RMI, near and north of Kwajalein and continuing northeast to beyond the Date Line. These pockets of 20 knot winds are encompassed by broader area of 15 kt winds that extends across the Marshall Islands and ending near Pohnpei. Convergence generated by the stronger flow meeting the slower trade-winds is generating some scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms around Pohnpei and extending eastward to Kwajalein in the RMI, passing well north of Kosrae. ...DISCUSSION... The NET is expected to drift westward over the next few days and will be followed by the trade-wind troughs in Chuuk State, this will continue to support scattered showers around Yap through Tuesday and scattered to numerous showers at Palau through at least Wednesday, while showers will slowly decrease across Chuuk Lagoon. The trade-wind surge is expected to remain weak and fragmented through Tuesday, with scattered showers expected to continue around Pohnpei and just north of Majuro. As the sub-tropical ridge north of the region shifts southward, expect the trade-wind surge to rebuild, which will also strengthen and push the convergence zone associated with the trade-surge southward, increasing showers across Majuro and the southern RMI and Kosrae later in the week. $$ Schank
