Scattered thunderstorms have developed along and just east of the Rio Grande this past hour. Updraft intensity has been very difficult to sustain with the lack of separation between downdrafts, leading to very brief windows of hail and wind. Most thunderstorms around the El Paso Metro will primarily just be light to moderate rainfall and occasional lightning. Stronger storms will be possible in eastern Otero and Hudspeth Counties over the next couple hours. Storm coverage will be hit-and-miss, with 30-40% coverage across far west Texas and south-central New Mexico. Thunderstorm development likely began where it did because of enhanced upper level support within the center of the upper low and weak trough axis extending down the Rio Grande corridor. The strongest storms will continue to rely greatly on this disturbance aloft, with the severe threat shifting east toward southeast New Mexico and the Trans-Pecos area by 2PM. Upper level support will diminish after 4PM today, ending our storm threat early this evening. Lingering rain showers may occur overnight. $$ Dennhardt
