All this week, your National Weather Service will be issuing informative messages to help you prepare for the upcoming hurricane season. Here is a list of the remaining topics for this week. Wednesday: Get Moving When a Storm Threatens Thursday: Stay Protected During Storms Friday: Use Caution After Storms Saturday: Take Action Today When a storm threatens, it is time to get moving. While longer-term preparedness activities should already have been completed, there is still more to do in the short-term when a storm is forecast to bring impacts to your area. To protect your home, activities such as boarding up windows, securing loose outdoor items, securing all exterior doors, and if not using it to evacuate, moving your vehicle to a safe location are the short-term actions to do. If you are evacuating, you should also unplug electrical equipment such as televisions and small appliances, and shut off water, gas, and electricity before leaving. Now is the time to enact your plans, whether you will be sheltering in place or evacuating. Be sure that your go bags are stocked and ready, phones and other electronics are charged, and your vehicle is filled up or charged. Also remember that your go bag should include medications, your important personal and property documents, and your written communication plan. If evacuating, know where you will be going, including any pets. If sheltering in place, be sure it is prepared and that you know the safest places inside. Always follow evacuation orders from your local authorities. You want to be sure to leave early enough to avoid being trapped by severe weather. Finally, check in on your neighbors, especially the elderly and other vulnerable people, and make sure that they have what they need and a way to evacuate if necessary. Also be sure they are aware of the latest forecasts so they know what to expect.
