A large storm system over the Southwest U.S. will pivot slowly into the Lower Mississippi Valley through Thursday. Deep moisture and lift will persist over the Mid-South ahead of this system resulting in several rounds of showers and thunderstorms with heavy rainfall. Moderate to heavy rainfall will begin to impact the Mid-South as early as Monday night and continue through Thursday. As multiple waves of rainfall affect the region through the week, cumulative totals of 4 to 8 inches with locally higher amounts are possible. Heavy rainfall this week will saturate soils and likely result in localized flooding of low lying and poor drainage locations. As additional rounds of rainfall occur through midweek, the threat of flash flooding and river flooding will also increase. Areas impacted by heavy rainfall could vary through the week, and the exact timing and amounts are not certain. However, with the expectation of several inches of rainfall, there will be a risk for flooding area wide. Please monitor updated forecasts and be alert for any flood watches or warnings that may be issued, especially if you live in an area susceptible to flooding. An unsettled and wet weather pattern will continue for much of the work week. This will bring periods of showers and thunderstorms across the region. While chances of showers are expected today and Tuesday, excessive rainfall is not anticipated in this period. Rainfall amounts into Tuesday night will range from around one inch over northeast Alabama, upwards to two inches over northwest Alabama. However, a stronger storm system developing over the Southern Plains late Monday into Tuesday will move eastward, and reach the Mississippi Delta and Mid South region late Wednesday into Thursday. Widespread showers and thunderstorms with heavy downpours will impact the Tennessee Valley Wednesday into Thursday. Heavier rain is expected with this second round, with additional amounts ranging from two to four inches. The heaviest rain appears more likely over northwest Alabama. These amounts will add to what fell earlier in the week. Grand totals of three to over five inches are possible. This amount of rain will result in saturated soils, with runoff producing areal flooding. A few instances of flash flooding cannot be ruled out. The runoff will go into area creeks, streams, and rivers, resulting in higher than normal water levels. Some of our extended guidance has a number of rivers going well into flood stage later this week. Residents in the Tennessee Valley should stay current with the latest forecast updates from the National Weather Service.
