Today will feature mostly sunny to partly cloudy conditions and light westerly breezes. Southerly winds will increase tonight, becoming westerly on Friday. Winds are expected to gust around 50 to 60 mph, particularly on Friday morning and early afternoon before easing in the evening. A strong storm system will bring a chance for snow or a rain/snow mix to parts of the area (mainly north of I-80) on Saturday night, a threat for thunderstorms (mainly south of I-80) on Sunday, and then a potential for accumulating snow Sunday night into Monday along with another round of very strong winds. Thereafter, conditions will briefly turn much colder, with single digit to sub-zero wind chills Monday and Tuesday mornings. Temperatures are expected to moderate during the middle and end of next week. Widespread critical fire weather conditions are expected across the area today with a Red Flag Warning in effect from 12pm to 9pm today. Southwesterly winds gusting 30-40mph will develop by the mid morning hours as the atmosphere begins to mix. Highs climb into the 70s today with soundings showing deep mixing which results in afternoon relative humidity values falling below 20% across the area. Winds shift to the west during the mid-late afternoon hours as a push of stronger winds moves into the area, with gusts to 45mph. Winds weaken somewhat around sunset, though gusts may still reach 30- 35mph. A cold front moves into the area around 9-11pm with winds shifting to the north behind the front and strengthening once again, particularly along/north of Interstate 80 and along/east of Highway 281 where gusts may reach 50-60mph. Relative humidity values will likely be slow to improve, with most areas remaining below 40% through midnight. If greater winds do unfold (as shown in the HRRR/RAP, it could result in humidity values falling back into the 20s after midnight. Otherwise, cooler temperatures behind the front will see a slow improvement in dewpoints overnight, reaching 50% by sunrise on Friday. Winds steadily decrease during the early morning hours, with most areas seeing gusts fall below 20mph by sunrise. Fire weather concerns continue into the weekend due to breezy winds and lower relative humidity values resulting in near-critical fire weather conditions across portions of the area during the afternoon. Strong winds gusting over 50mph are possible on Sunday, but cooler temperatures and chances for snow bring uncertainty on the fire weather potential. A clipper system is headed into the region today. Temperatures will jump into the 50s and 60s ahead of a cold front. This will result in afternoon humidity from anywhere between around 50 percent across the northeast to around 40 percent across north central South Dakota and closer to 20 to 30 percent across central South Dakota. Winds are the main story. Ahead of the front winds will be from the south to southwest and slowly increase to 30 to 45 mph by mid day. Then the front comes through shifting winds to the northwest and increasing to between 50 and 60 mph with some of the more wind prone areas possibly getting up around 75 mph. Grassland fire danger rates very high to extreme for all but the northeast of the state. There will be a few showers around today, however fast moving showers with irrelevant moisture should have little impact in the face of such strong winds.
