The ice edge is open water. FORECAST FOR THE CHUKCHI SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast confidence is moderate to high. Variable winds today will become predominately out of the east through the forecast period as the high shifts to the east and low pressure moves south of the area. This will bring warmer temperatures and push ice farther to the north and west. The few remaining "islands" of ice separated from the pack will continue to thin, leaving large areas of ice free water in the Chukchi. Expect retreat of 30-50 miles to the north in addition to continued thinning/melt. && Jones
