The latest ice analysis shows that formation of ice on the Great Lakes continues to remains extremely low as we are approaching the middle of this Winter season. The latest estimated has the ice coverage under a half percent, or 0.4 percent in total for all of the Great Lakes. The very limited and thin ice that has formed be found near Escanaba, Michigan in the northern areas of Little Bay de Noc and Big Bay de Noc. There is little, thin ice in the waterways just east of Sault Ste Marie. Other than those two areas mentioned, there is no other ice across the Great Lakes at this time. The general weather pattern of milder than average temperatures and the lack of colder air staying place over the Great Lakes region will keep ice formation extremely slow and limited through this weekend. Slightly colder temperatures but still above average may move into the Upper Great Lakes region. Any new ice development through the end of this week and weekend will be confined to protected bay waters and shallow waterways. We will likely stay below average with ice development and coverage on the Great Lakes heading into the middle of January.
