Ice coverage across the Great Lakes region remains paltry with about 3.5% total coverage across the lakes, most of which is in the Canadian Great Lakes waters. Areas with notable ice coverage on the American side include Chequamegon Bay and the edges of Whitefish Bay in Lake Superior, the Bays de Noc and the edges of Green Bay in western Lake Michigan, northern Lake Michigan into the Straits of Mackinac and far northwest Lake Huron, and the St. Mary's river and northern Lake Huron along with Saginaw Bay. Lakes Erie and St. Clair are largely ice free. Colder temperatures over the last couple days have helped reinforce this ice area. Temperatures will be seasonable to slightly below normal this weekend and could be favorable for new ice development. However, a low pressure system just to the east of the lake on Sunday could promote some stronger winds, which may prevent as efficient ice growth, especially over the eastern Great Lakes. A warmer pattern will start to return by Monday and remain in place for much of next week. Temperatures will be 10 to 20 degrees above normal for late February and further reduce ice in the region.
