Nearshore Waters from Winthrop Harbor to Calumet Harbor... Nearshore Waters from Calumet Harbor to Michigan City... Open Waters from Winthrop Harbor to Michigan City out to Mid Lake... At 953 PM CDT, Doppler radar indicated a line of strong thunderstorms with an accompanying wind shift to northwest with gusts of 30 to 40 kt. These thunderstorms were located along a line extending from 9 nm west of Bayside to 49 nm northwest of McHenry, moving southeast at 30 knots. If these thunderstorms hold together they will reach the Illinois nearshore waters off Lake County IL between just after 1100 PM CDT and 1130 PM CDT. This line of storms will move across the remainder of southwestern Lake Michigan through around 100 AM CDT. Mariners should listen for later statements and possible special marine warnings. Be prepared for a sudden wind shift accompanied by a quick increase in winds and waves. Seek safe harbor before this threatening weather approaches. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Mariners can expect gusty winds to around 30 knots, locally higher waves, and lightning strikes. Boaters should seek safe harbor immediately until these storms pass. These strong thunderstorms will likely produce winds to around 30 knots, and could pose a serious hazard for boaters.
