Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for portions of the upper Midwest into the central Great Lakes, as well as northern New England. High Wind Warnings are in effect for the lower Great Lakes, southwestern Pennsylvania, and northern New England. Areas of light to moderate snow were impacting areas west of the low pressure center across the upper Midwest into Michigan. However, very gusty winds behind the low pressure system in conjunction with a reinforcing surge of arctic air blowing over the fresh snow-covered grounds are expected to create blizzard-like conditions for portions of the northern Plains and the upper Midwest through tonight. Meanwhile, a period of snow is forecast to spread northward through northern New England today before changing over to rain or mixed rain/snow by this evening. Even though the deep low will move farther away on Wednesday, lake-effect snows and very gusty winds are forecast to linger near the Great Lakes as arctic air overspreads much of the eastern two-thirds of the country.
