Blizzard Warnings are in effect for portions of eastern Colorado, northwestern Kansas, central Nebraska, and southern South Dakota. Winter Weather Advisories and Winter Storm Warnings are in effect from the central and northern Plains to the Upper Midwest. Wind Advisories and High Wind Warnings are in effect for portions of the central and southern Plains and the Middle and Lower Mississippi Valley. For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings and advisories, please see www.weather.gov At 900 PM CDT...A vigorous upper level shortwave was providing support for a strengthening low pressure system over the central and southern Plains. The central low was located over far southeastern Colorado with a minimum central pressure of 983 mb. An occluded front extended from the low into the Oklahoma panhandle to a triple point with a cold front extending to the southwest and a warm front extending to the southeast. Another frontal boundary was draped on the northern side of the low across the central Plains and into the Midwest. National Weather Service Doppler Radar indicated that there were showers and thunderstorms with locally heavy rainfall on the southern and eastern side of the system while moderate to heavy mixed wintry precipitation and snow were falling on the northern and western side of the system. Widespread heavy snow is expected from western Nebraska northeastward to central and northern Minnesota. Snow may accumulate at 1-2 inches per hour in heavier bands tonight across Nebraska, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Storm total snowfall may exceed a foot (greater than 50 percent chance) over northern and northeastern Minnesota. Heavy snow combined with gusty winds will produce blizzard conditions with near zero visibility into early Tuesday, which will make travel nearly impossible and could result in power outages and tree damage.
