Blizzard Warnings are in effect for north-central South Dakota, eastern North Dakota, and northwestern Minnesota. Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for portions of northern Minnesota. Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for portions of western North Dakota, northwestern Nebraska, northeastern South Dakota, and central Minnesota. Additional Winter Weather Advisories are also in effect for portions of Upstate New York and interior New England. For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings and advisories, please see www.weather.gov At 900 AM CDT...An area of low pressure was analyzed approximately 50 miles north of Minneapolis/St. Paul with a minimum central pressure of 997 mb, or about 29.44 inches of mercury. An occluded front extended southeastward into southwestern Wisconsin with a trailing cold front stretching southwestward over the Middle Mississippi Valley into the Southern Plains and a warm front to the east over the Lower Great Lakes and into the Appalachians/Mid-Atlantic. A couple bands of light to moderate snowfall were located over northwestern Minnesota/eastern North Dakota and central North Dakota to the north/west of the surface low. Some light freezing drizzle was also falling in the shallower subfreezing air to the northeast of the low and north of the warm front in northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin. Surface observations indicated blustery winds continued to the west of the low over portions of the Northern/Central Plains and Upper Midwest, ranging from about 20 to 30 mph and with gusts upwards of 40 mph. These winds were continuing to contribute to areas of blowing snow and blizzard conditions, even for regions into South Dakota and Nebraska where snowfall had come to an end. Additionally, surface observations indicated very chilly temperatures in the teens in the Northern Plains and 20s and 30s for the Central Plains and Upper Midwest. These temperatures combined with the gusty winds were contributing to wind chills below zero for portions of North Dakota. ...Selected preliminary Storm Total Snowfall in inches from 700 AM CDT Mon Apr 03 through 900 AM CDT Wed Apr 05... ...MICHIGAN... The light to moderate snow falling to the west around the backside of the low will begin to taper off for North Dakota/Minnesota as the low tracks further away into Canada. Additional snow totals generally between 1-3" will be possible through Wednesday evening/early Thursday, with some locally higher additional totals upwards of 6" possible in northern Minnesota. The light freezing drizzle over northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin will also soon come to an end as the occluded/cold front pushes north and eastward, ushering in colder, drier air. Additional accumulations of up to a tenth of an inch will be possible in northeastern Minnesota along the shore of Lake Superior. Finally, as the system tracks northeastward, there will be a secondary area of wintry precipitation focused on interior New England beginning Wednesday afternoon and lasting into Thursday morning. Snowfall totals between 3-6", freezing rain accretions up to of 0.3-0.4", and sleet accumulations of an inch are all expected. The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction Center at 1000 PM CDT. Please refer to your local National Weather Service office for additional information on this event. Putnam $$
