####018002032#### ACPN60 PHFO 032309 TWSCP Monthly Tropical Weather Summary...Corrected NWS Central Pacific Hurricane Center Honolulu HI 1230 PM HST Sep 1 2023 For the central North Pacific, between 140W and 180W: There were two tropical cyclones in the Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC) area of responsibility during the month of August. Hurricane Dora crossed 140W into the central North Pacific on August 6, passed well south of the main Hawaiian Islands on August 8, then crossed 180W into the western North Pacific on August 12. As Hurricane Dora passed south of Hawaii, the steep pressure gradient between the hurricane and a strong high to the north of the islands triggered a damaging high wind event across the chain. Dora remained a hurricane the entire time it was in the central North Pacific, which would make this system the second on record to do so, and the first since Hurricane John in 1994. Hurricane Dora may have also set a record for the longest-lasting Pacific category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale, although most of the associated track at this strength was in the eastern North Pacific. Tropical Storm Greg crossed 140W into the central North Pacific on August 14, then dissipated south of the Hawaiian Islands on August 18. Reports on individual tropical cyclones, when completed, are available at the CPHC website at: www.hurricanes.gov/data/tcr/index.php?season=2023&basin=cpac Note, the summary table below only includes tropical cyclones in the CPHC area of responsibility, and the dates are based on Universal Coordinated Time, UTC.
