FGAK87 PAJK 202017 AKZ025-210200- HYDROLOGIC STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE JUNEAU AK 12 PM AKDT WED JUL 20 2011 ...SIGNIFICANT RISE ON THE MENDENHALL LAKE AND RIVER... IN THE PAST 24 HOURS THERE HAS BEEN A MORE THAN A 2 FOOT RISE ON THE MENDENHALL LAKE AND RIVER. THE CURRENT LAKE STAGE IS 7.02 FEET AND THE RIVER STAGE OF 9.5 FEET FLOOD STAGE IS 9 FEET FOR THE LAKE AND 11.5 FEET FOR THE RIVER. THE WATER LEVEL IS RISING FAST DUE TO A POSSIBLE GLACIER DAM RELEASE AND AT THIS TIME DO NOT EXPECT WATER LEVELS TO FLOW OUT OF ITS BANKS. THERE IS A LOT OF UNKNOWNS WITH THIS EVENT SO PEOPLE WHO LIVE OR RECREATE NEAR THE MENDENHALL RIVER SHOULD REMAIN ALERT AND BE PREPARED TO TAKE ACTION IF NEEDED. THERE WAS ONE EVENT LIKE THIS BACK IN JUNE OF 2007 AND THE RISE LASTED 36-40 HOURS. ONCE THE RIVER CRESTS THE WATER LEVEL WILL DROP SIGNIFICANTLY AND SHOULD BE BACK TO A BASE FLOW LEVEL NEAR 5 FEET ON THE LAKE AND 8 FEET ON THE RIVER. THIS STATEMENT WILL BE UPDATED AT 6 PM AKDT WEDNESDAY. $$ ABJ JUL 11
