FXUS62 KKEY 061533 AFDKEY Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Key West FL 1033 AM EST Mon Feb 6 2023 ...New DISCUSSION, MARINE, AVIATION... .DISCUSSION... Issued at 1030 AM EST Mon Feb 6 2023 A beautiful Monday is on tap for the Florida Keys island communities and coastal waters. Current temperatures are in the mid 70s, with dewpoints in the lower 70s. Marine observation platforms are recording northeast winds at 10 to 15 knots. KBYX is currently depicting light showers just off our waters of the Straits of Florida. Surface analysis depict a potent low pressure system just out of the northeast continental U.S. with its associated "front" over Cuba. In addition, a high pressure system is building near the Gulf States. Closer to home, our sensible weather today will be dominated by a mean level ridge currently located in the Gulf of Mexico. This ridge will propagate east throughout the day and dry out our atmosphere and we are seeing evidence of this on our 12Z RAOB. This morning sounding sampled a very dry and stable layer above 700 mb. However, we still have some patchy low to mid level moisture, therefore, a 10 percent POP seems appropriate for today. Based on this, no changes are planned or needed at this time. && .MARINE... Issued at 1030 AM EST Mon Feb 6 2023 No watches, warnings, or advisories are in effect for the Florida Keys coastal waters at this time. However, Small Craft Advisories may be required tonight for portions of the Straits of Florida and Hawk Channel. High pressure will build across the eastern United States, resulting in freshening northeast to east breezes this evening. Fresh to strong easterly breezes will continue through the middle of the week as the high pressure builds into the western North Atlantic and offshore the southeast United States. Winds will turn out of the southeast and slowly decrease Thursday and Thursday night as the high pressure moves further east. A cold front will approach the Florida Keys and adjoining coastal waters late Friday. && .AVIATION... (15Z TAFS) Issued at 1030 AM EST Mon Feb 6 2023 VFR conditions will prevail at both EYW and MTH through the TAF period, although there may be some brief bouts of MVFR ceilings overnight tonight at either terminal. Near surface winds out of the northeast at 8 to 10 knots will veer to the northeast to east by this evening, increasing to 10 to 12 knots with occasional gusts near 18 knots. && .CLIMATE... On this day in 2009, both the daily record cold high temperature (64F) and the record low temperature (49F) were recorded in Marathon. Temperature records in February date back to 1951. && .KEY WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... FL...None.
