Northwesterly winds in combination with frigid, Arctic air could lead to extreme vessel icing at rates of 4 cm an hour or greater. A very cold airmass will move south from the Arctic Sunday, bringing with it strong winds. Heavy to extreme freezing spray is expected to spread south to southeast from St. Matthew Island, in areas with open water, late Sunday night. Expect heavy to extreme freezing spray off of the coast of Cape Newenham starting Monday morning, and Bristol Bay early Monday afternoon. The threat of extreme freezing spray could persist through Wednesday. Operating a vessel in heavy to extreme freezing spray is hazardous. Freezing spray may render mechanical and electronic components inoperable. Rapid ice accretion on decks and superstructures may result in catastrophic loss of stability. $$
