The Taos Avalanche Center in Taos has issued a Backcountry Avalanche Watch. * WHAT...The avalanche danger is currently Moderate. A significant winter storm will intensify throughout the Northern NM mountains today, pushing the avalanche danger to High at all elevations by Saturday, February 3, 2024. * WHERE...Wheeler Peak Wilderness Area and Columbine Hondo Wilderness above 8,000 feet. * WHEN... In effect from Fri 07:00 MST to Sat 07:00 MST. * IMPACTS...The winter storm will bring 12 to 20" of snow (1.5-2.0" SWE) and increasingly strong winds. Large dangerous natural and human-triggered avalanches are likely throughout the day Saturday. * PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...Dangerous avalanche conditions will develop today. Careful snowpack evaluation, cautious route finding and conservative decision-making are essential for travel in the backcountry today.
